Springfield, MA – The Thunderbirds hosted the Checkers over the weekend winning on Friday night and the 4-2 victory on Saturday night. After a scoreless first period the Thunderbirds got on the board first when Simon Robertsson banged home a rebound off a shot that clanged the post. Springfields Marcus Sylvegard the hero of Friday nights matchup would get a power play tally on a tip in front of Checkers net minder Ken Appleby. The Checkers would get one back on a late power play as Trevor Carrick snapped one in with 1.8 seconds left in the period. The Checkers Marek Alscher opened the third with his first AHL goal tying the game 2:32 into the period. A pair of match penalties late in the period had the teams playing 4 on 4 when Matthew Peca all alone with the puck in front of Appleby put the puck home on his second chance rebound and the lead. Charlotte pulled their goalie with two minutes to go and Dylan Peterson got the empty net score to seal the win. Thunderbirds goalie Vadim Zherenko had 27 saves for the win.
