Providence, R.I. – The Syracuse Crunch, the North Division leader, defeated the Providence Bruins 3-2 in a shootout on Sunday afternoon. It was a high-charged, entertaining contest in which the Bruins held the edge in play and shots on goal but were unable to come away with a win.
Bruins goalie Michael DiPietro and Syracuse goalie Matt Tomkins held the game scoreless in the first period. Syracuse scored in the second period when Tristan Allard tapped home a rebound past a sprawling DiPietro. The Bruins would tie the score when Patrick Brown would send home a backhander through traffic. A late Bruins penalty in the period would lead to a Syracuse power play goal from Jack Finley to end the period with a 2-1 lead. The Bruins would tie the game midway through the third on a power play goal from Anthony Richard. After some timely saves by both goalies, the rest of the game ended tied. It was on to a shootout after a scoreless overtime where the Bruins had a power play they could not capitalize. Syracuse forward Gage Goncalves would get the only score in the second round to seal the win.
