AHL Basics Questions

What is the American Hockey League?

The American Hockey League (AHL) is a professional ice hockey league based in North America. It serves as the primary development league for the National Hockey League (NHL), where young players hone their skills before advancing to the big leagues.

How many teams are in the AHL?

As of the 2023-2024 season, there are 32 teams in the American Hockey League, divided into four divisions. Each team is either directly affiliated with an NHL team or, in the case of the Chicago Wolves, operates as an independent organization.

Do all AHL teams have an NHL affiliate?

In the 2022-23 season, all AHL teams had an NHL affiliate. The introduction of the Coachella Valley Firebirds as the AHL affiliate to the Seattle Kraken made it an even 32 affiliates to the 32 NHL teams.

On April 5, 2023, the Chicago Wolves announced they would be going independent. They became the first team to not have an NHL affiliate since the 1994-95 season.

AHL Player Movement Questions

Can AHL players get called up to the NHL?

Yes! One of the main purposes of the AHL is to develop players for the NHL. Whenever an NHL team has an injury or needs to supplement their roster, they can call up players from their AHL affiliate to join the NHL team for a period of time.

Can AHL players be traded?

Yes, AHL players can be traded between teams just like NHL players. Depending on the contract each player is under, they can be traded directly to another AHL team or to an NHL franchise.
