Who Are the Calgary Wranglers?

The Calgary Wranglers are in their first year of existence, having been relocated previous to the 22-23 season. The Wranglers, previously the Stockton Heat, were founded in 1977 as the Maine Mariners, and have also operated as the Utica Devils, the St John Flames, the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights, the Quad City Flames, the Abbotsford Heat and the Adirondack Flames.

They are unrelated to the Calgary Wranglers of the WHL, who operated between 1997 and 1987, but did take their name from that team. They were one of the four teams relocated to California in 2015 as part of the initiative to create a majority California Pacific Division, before a temporary relocation to Calgary during the 2020-21 season due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. The ability to call players up short notice was something some Canadian teams could not employ easily, with Vancouver and Edmonton having American based AHL teams during the COVID-19 pandemic. They returned to California for the 2021-22 season, but the following season they moved back to Calgary permanently.

The Wranglers do not have a Calder Cup under that name, but as the St John Flames, they won the Calder Cup in 2001, beating the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins in 6 games, and as the Maine Mariners, they won three Calder Cups in 1978, 1979 and 1984.

In the 22-23 season, the Wranglers finished with a regular season record of 51-17-3-1, winning the McGregor Kilpatrick Trophy and achieving the ninth best record in AHL history. They lost in the Pacific Division finals to the Coachella Valley Firebirds.

Their current head coach is Trent Cull, their current GM is Brad Pascall, and they play out of the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Notable former Wranglers include Dustin Wolf, Ryan Lomberg and Dillon Dube.
