Who Are The Providence Bruins?

The Providence Bruins were formed prior to the start of the 1992-93 American Hockey League season after the mayor of the city, Buddy Cianci, was able to successful convince the Maine Mariners to relocate to Providence and fully embraced their new affiliation with the Boston Bruins.

Hockey history in the AHL runs deep in Providence, as the Bruins became the first team to play in the city since the now-defunct Providence Reds moved back in 1977. The original team was one of the league’s founding members in 1926 and won four Calder Cups under that name before moving to New York to become the Binghamton Dusters.

They last won the Calder Cup in 1999, beating the Rochester Americans in five games. That season has been the only time that the team has made it to the final round since returning.

The Providence Bruins finished the 2022-23 season with a regular season record of 44-18-8-2, first in the Atlantic Division. They would lose in the second round of the Calder Cup Playoffs to the Hartford Wolf Pack.

Their current head coach is Ryan Mougenel, their GM is Evan Gold, and they play out of the Amica Mutual Pavilion.

Notable former Providence Bruins include Peter Laviolette, Tuukka Rask, Patrice Bergeron, and Brad Marchand.
